Looking back on: Saturday October 17, 2009

Nights here are cold. I didn’t pack a quilt, someone else did, and so I have to make do with a piece of cloth big enough to cover my bum only. To be fare, at least my bum is nice and snug, but the rest of me is freezing. I try to make do, but midway through the night I usually end up just putting my mattress on top of me and using that as a stiff quilt.

This morning we went to the nearby Waterfall with the Compasio kids and staff. I was like Spider-man on those rocks, clinging to them with rushing water speeding over them, but my slippery thongs were a bit different, and I slipped a few exaggerated times, each time winning the battle not to fall on my ass in the mud, but alas, each time making a big enough scene that it wouldn’t have made too much of a difference. I did hope no one saw, but those hopes were dashed as soon as some of the kids reenacted it for me.

It’s unfortunate that thus far we have not been able to go out and see the work of Compasio out on the streets, but the housing situation is a big part of it. The kids warm up to me, in my usual fashion as a bigger variant of them. They are still intensely amused by the grandeur of my arm pit, chest, and leg hair. I’ve even won the baby over, who at first was greatly intimated by my size (among other things, I’m sure).

I was just downstairs with the kids watching tv. Thai soaps are weird… like all soaps I suppose. Watching it I recognize every single song but the theme, as they are all lifted from American movies. Last night the theme of Forrest Gump played along to… well I don’t really know what was going on, but I’m happy I have my laptop to head upstairs for.

Tomorrow we go to church, and, I don’t know what else. The boys seem to be enjoying it here, but Jumpy seems the opposite, often sitting out of games or away from the other kids. Hopefully she’ll warm up before we leave and enjoy herself.
